International Electric Wins Digital UPS Development Project for Innovative SMRs... Targeting Next-Generation Nuclear Power Electrical Equipment Market

International Electric Co., Ltd. has won the contract to develop a digital uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for innovative small modular reactors (SMRs) ordered by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, marking the company's entry into the next-generation nuclear power plant electrical equipment market.

On July 20, International Electric Co., Ltd. announced that it has been awarded the project "Development of Digital UPS for Reinforced DC Power System for Innovative SMRs," initiated by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power.

This project is a key research and development initiative aimed at increasing the safety of the innovative small modular reactor (I-SMR) and enhancing the reliability of its power systems. From July 2026 to February 2030, spanning approximately 44 months, International Electric Co., Ltd. will secure design technologies for digital uninterruptible power supplies specialized for reinforced DC power systems, and oversee product manufacturing, performance verification, and official certification.

The company plans to improve the stability and availability of DC power systems by applying enhanced dual power redundancy design and digital control technology. In addition, by integrating AI-based fault prediction and diagnosis capabilities, the company intends to detect equipment anomalies early and establish a data-driven preventive maintenance system, thereby enhancing the reliability and operational efficiency of next-generation nuclear power electrical facilities.

Founded in 1946, International Electric Co., Ltd. is Korea's first specialized manufacturer of transformers and uninterruptible power supplies. Over the past 80 years, the company has supplied a variety of power conversion systems—including transformers, chargers, inverters, and UPS—leveraging its accumulated design and manufacturing expertise in electrical equipment.

In particular, the company has experience in the design, manufacturing, testing, and verification of nuclear safety-grade chargers, inverters, and other electrical equipment for nuclear power plants. It also continues to advance its high-reliability power conversion technologies, based on in-house digital control board and control algorithm design capabilities.

Sunho Kim, CEO of International Electric Co., Ltd., stated, "This project will be an important opportunity to expand the core power conversion technologies we have accumulated in the nuclear sector into the field of innovative small modular reactors." He continued, "We aim to contribute to improving the safety and reliability of innovative small modular reactors by securing independent bases for the design, manufacturing, and certification of next-generation digital UPS for nuclear power applications."

He added, "Building on this project, we will expand our participation in domestic innovative small modular reactor initiatives and actively pursue entry into the global SMR electrical equipment market, developing this field as a future growth engine."

International Electric Co., Ltd. plans to strengthen its technological competitiveness in the next-generation nuclear digital UPS sector by continuously enhancing the digitalization and AI-based predictive maintenance capabilities of its nuclear power electrical equipment.

The significance of winning this contract lies in International Electric Co., Ltd. establishing a foothold for entry into the next-generation small modular reactor electrical equipment market by combining its nuclear power conversion technology with AI-based digital solutions.
